About

Welcome. You’ve reached Images From Here.com, the photo weblog of Thomas Athey. This site was launched in the fall of 2004 and is, like many web sites, always a work in progress.

In the summer of 2004, I was struggling to revise my existing web site, tomathey.com, hoping to find a way to provide more dynamic image content, facilitate dialogue with visitors and provide a more effective venue for reviewing archived images. Without realizing it, I was trying to create something I'd never heard of - a photoblog. Toward the end of the summer, frustrated with issues of coding, design and functionality and making little progress on my revision, I happened to stumble upon the photoblogs.org site and was amazed to find thousands of artists sharing their work in the unique hybrid photoblog format, part photo gallery and part weblog. I immediately changed the focus of my efforts, purchased Movable Type (a web-based personal publishing system) and started to work on my own blog.

As I sifted through the incredible array of web pages linked through photoblogs.org I began to get a sense of what most of the sites are really all about – a sense of place. Sometimes it’s a physical place, sometimes an esthetic place, sometimes an emotional place. Usually it's some, or all, of the above…

Upon viewing the work of so many artists from around the world it became clear to me that what I was trying to do was the very same thing - share images from the world that I live in. That is, Images From Here.

Here, for me, looks like this:

The Physical Place – I live in Austin, Texas, USA. Although, like most photographers I know, I shoot wherever I happen to be.

The Esthetic Place – Well, you can decide for yourself. If someone asks, I usually define myself as an abstract expressionist photographer. So for now, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

The Emotional Place – That’s more of a journey than a place, I guess. You may have to read between the pixels on that one…

Although there is some method to the madness, I have adopted a somewhat non-linear approach to the design of my blog. That is, although I do attempt to post a ‘new’ image every day, the images are not at all in chronological order. In other words, this is an art gallery for me, not a daily diary. I post pictures from throughout my artistic life, so on any given day you may see an image made ten minutes ago or something that’s been laying around the studio for twenty years. I make comments when I have something to say and I enjoy dialogue about technical issues, esthetic concerns and the state of the arts in our world today. And I always value and appreciate your constructive criticisms.

So take some time, look around. Leave some comments if you like. Refer me to other artists that you've seen and enjoyed. Bookmark the site. And please, come back often to see what's new.
